Here are some favorite web sites. If this isn't enough to satisfy you, I also have a list of selected readings from the internet.

Media

  • The Nation

The oldest magazine of dissent in the, well, nation. In an age of corporate media shilling, the Nation provides nuance and well-written challenges to the Time/Warner/AOL/Disney/GE/Rupert Murdoch/NY Times official story.

  • Working For Change

Working for Change is another superb source for alternative views.

  • NPR

O.K. — maybe they’re a little corporate and safe, but any site that has Terry Gross, Car Talk, and Daniel Schorr is worth a trip.

  • Democracy Now!

A real reporter in the tradition of I.F. Stone, Amy Goodman speaks truth to power — a rarity in the age of John Stossel and Bill O’Reilly.

Music

  • JazzWest

JazzWest is a good and quite comprehensive site for checking out the Bay Area jazz scene. They are currently featuring an interview with Michael, conducted by Jerry Karp of Rocket Words.

  • The Jazzschool

The only school in the country dedicated exclusively to jazz...

  • Dave Liebman

This jazz master always has something interesting and thought-provoking to say. He’s a superb writer in addition to being one of the five best and most influential sax players alive today.

  • Steve Smith and Vital Information

Steve Smith is one of the all-time great drummers, I’m lucky enough to co-lead a group with him, and you should check out the absurd number of projects this man is involved in!

  • André Bush

Andre Bush is one of the best guitarists I’ve played with since I moved to California. We’ve done numerous projects together, including his CDs Invisible City and Darwin’s Waiting Room, and he’s a charter member of the CARMA big band.

Merriment

  • Whitehouse.org

It is the responsibility of every red-blooded American to visit this site.

  • The Surrealist Compliment Generator

This has to be experienced to be believed.

  • The Onion

On average, the funniest site I’ve seen on the web.

  • Harry Shearer

To my mind, Harry Shearer is consistently the best satirist in this country — particularly Le Show.

  • Michael Moore

Like Shakespeare’s clowns and jesters, Michael Moore has some of the most pungent, germane and funniest critiques of the current oligopoly.
