The Brecker-Shorter Project

The Brecker-Shorter Project

Formed as a group doing a tribute concert to Michael Brecker and Wayne Shorter, the 2 pre-eminent jazz saxophonists of the past 40 years, the group is one of which Michael Zilber says “there is no group of players with whom I enjoy playing more in the Bay Area.” Peter Horvath, the fiery and thrilling pianist know for his work with Lenny White and Victor Bailey, joins Zilber and the rhythm team of Shifflett and Lewis to create powerful and evocative reimaginings of less familiar material associated with Wayne and Michael, as well as Zilber originals in homage to the two. Zilber is a self-described “recovering Brekerholic” who also owes an enormous debt to the genius of Wayne Shorter, although he has developed a unique sound and approach that is all his own. The group is far from a cover band, always reworking the material to make it their own, but cognizant of the enormous impact these two musicians have had on the entire jazz world.
